Representative Ilhan Omar announced Wednesday that she will be moving out of her Washington, D.C., residence following a recent raid by federal agents. Speaking in her first interview since the incident, the Minnesota Democrat explained that the intense scrutiny surrounding her home has left her feeling unsafe. The search occurred early one morning when Homeland Security investigators arrived with a warrant, spending several hours scouring the property and seizing seventeen items, ranging from electronic devices to a children’s book written in Somali.

The Justice Department has remained tightlipped about the specifics of the probe, describing it only as a criminal investigation. However, sources familiar with the matter suggest federal authorities are looking into potential fraud regarding immigration paperwork within Omar’s family. This has reportedly led to grand jury subpoenas being issued to several of her relatives. For her part, Omar expressed total confidence that she did nothing wrong, pointing out that she entered the country as a child seeking asylum and questioning how a twelve year old could possibly conspire to defraud government services.

The timing of the operation has sparked significant backlash among congressional Democrats, who noted that such aggressive tactics are rarely used against candidates immediately preceding an election. With midterms just weeks away, many see the move as politically motivated, especially given Omar’s long history of clashes with President Donald Trump. While she remains favored to win reelection in her Minneapolis district, Omar admitted she was rattled by the intrusion and the resulting public spectacle.

Despite characterizing the experience as jarring, Omar described the agents themselves as intrusive but polite during their time in her home. As soon as possible, however, she intends to relocate to ensure her privacy and security while the legal process unfolds. The situation continues to draw national attention as critics and supporters alike debate whether the investigation represents legitimate law enforcement work or targeted political intimidation.
