A high ranking faith leader with Turning Point USA is sounding the alarm over a recent Australian parliamentary inquiry, suggesting that the interrogation of a Christian leader serves as a warning sign for religious freedoms in the United States. Lucas Miles, the organization’s vice president of faith, has called on President Donald Trump to exert diplomatic pressure on the Australian government following a hearing that he describes as a politically motivated witch hunt targeting the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

The controversy stems from an October 16 hearing intended to examine allegations of coordinated political activity during Australia’s 2025 federal election. However, the proceedings took a turn when Independent MP Monique Ryan began questioning Bruce Hales, the global leader of the church, about his theological influence. The questioning shifted from electoral conduct to personal lifestyle choices, with lawmakers asking if Hales dictated members’ decisions regarding their marriages, clothing, facial hair and even pet ownership. While some politicians present dismissed these lines of inquiry as ridiculous and irrelevant to the mission of the committee, others continued to probe Hales’ spiritual authority.

Miles argues that this transition from legal oversight to religious scrutiny represents a dangerous precedent where government bodies put Christian doctrine on trial. He believes that attacking a faith group based on its internal tenets rather than actual legal violations creates a blueprint for similar crackdowns globally. By describing the situation as a canary in the coal mine, Miles suggests that if such intrusions are tolerated in Australia, American believers may eventually face similar governmental interference in their private religious lives.

For his part, Bruce Hales has denied any involvement in coordinating political campaigns or utilizing church resources for illegal electoral activity. He maintains that members act independently and rejected claims that he directs their civic participation through mandates. Despite these denials, senators have raised questions about the relationship between the church and American conservative groups like Turning Point USA, further intertwining this international dispute with U.S. politics. Miles continues to seek intervention from the White House Faith Office to ensure that religious liberties remain protected against state overreach abroad and at home.
